Ashok Som is Professor of Management Department at ESSEC Business School. Professor Som is one of the pioneering thought leaders in designing organizations and an expert in global strategy. His books Organization-Redesign and Innovative HRM was published by Oxford University Press (2008) and International Management: Managing the Global Corporation was published by McGrawHill, UK (2009). His co-authored book titled The Road to Luxury: The Evolution, Markets and Strategies of Luxury Brand Management was published by Wiley in March 2015. At ESSEC, he was the Founding Associate Dean of the full-time, one-year post experience Global MBA program of ESSEC Group, the founder of the India Research Centre and the founder Director of the Global Management Programs on Luxury and Retail Management (in partnership with Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad). He received his Ph.D from IIM Ahmedabad, M.Sc and M.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and bachelors degree from Presidency College, Calcutta, India. He is passionate about case based research and teaching. He was the winner of EFMD Case Writing Competition 2008 in the Indian Management category. He won The Case Centre Award 2014 in the Entrepreneurship category. He is Adjunct Faculty at IIM Ahmedabad (India), Mannheim Business School (Germany) and Visiting Professor at IIM Calcutta (India), Auckland University of Technology (New Zealand); Graduate School of Business, Keio University (Tokyo) and Tamkang University (Taiwan). He has been featured in Who’s Who of the World from 2008 onwards. He was nominated as one of the 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century in 2013. He is a regular speaker in international conferences and advises European and Indian multi-nationals.
Ashok’s current research interests lie in the role of global strategy in building brands that transcend geographies. His expertise in organizational design and people practices help him designing the context required to create brands that can sustain itself in developed, emerging and frontier markets. To enable this he builds on his experience on identifying and adoption of strategic innovations from different geographies that shape creative industries such as the Luxury industry, the global Movie Industry and the Art Industry.
In earlier years, he has been involved with large corporations such as Caisses d’Epargne, Lafarge, LVMH, LOreal, Canal+, Renault, Vodafone, Philips, Faurecia, France Telecom, Scabal on topics related to global strategy, organization design, international HR, post-merger integration and cross-cultural management processes. He has intervened in programs for top-management executives of France, India, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Norway, Mauritius, GCC and others in topics such as un-bundling growth paradox, building emerging market brands, growth of luxury business in emerging markets, achieving leadership through operational efficiency, managing talent in creative industries and others. He is the co-ordinator of the module “Managing the Global Corporation” in the ESSEC-Mannheim Executive MBA programs. He is the founder Academic Director of ESSEC-IIMA Global Management Program on Luxury and Retail Management.
He lives with his family in Maisons Laffitte , a suburb of Paris.
